Description
Best-selling author Neil Gaiman is acclaimed for his imaginative tales that provide new takes on stories older than recorded history. In American Gods, he presents a magical blend of fantasy and horror in a delightfully twisted adventure featuring such imaginative creations as seven-foot-tall leprechauns, taxi-driving genies, and a pantheon of unforgettable characters. When Mr. Wednesday offers newly released Shadow a job, the ex-convict figures he’s got nothing to lose. But Wednesday is more than he seems; he’s one of the thousands of gods brought to America over the centuries by faithful immigrants. Soon Shadow is in the midst of a war between these weakening older gods and the rising contemporary gods--such as television and technology--that people now worship. At stake is more than Shadow’s life, for the winning side stands poised to collect the soul of the nation. American Gods showcases all the skill and imagination that have won Gaiman the World Fantasy Award. George Guidall’s scintillating narration leads listeners through the mystical realms that lie just beneath everyday life.

fourStar.jpg American Gods, Fantasy Classic
(Review of American Gods)
Few books fascinate and intrigue while enticing the listener to chuckle. Pure escapism and pure delight. Mr. Gaimans work is the embodiment of true originality. When combined with arguably the world’s foremost literary actor, the work becomes an inspiration. If you like fiction, George Guidall, or just a good yarn, youre gonna love this one! - Reviewer from

fiveStar.jpg A Master Storyteller
(Review of American Gods)
Famous for (depending on whom you ask) his graphic novels, childrens books, or novels, Neil Gaiman has produced another wonderful work with American Gods, an epic picaresque that discovers America through the twin vehicles of the protagonist, Shadow, and the gods with whom he interacts (both those nearly forgotten and the fresh ones desperate not to be). While often classified as sci-fi/fantasy, the book really does transcend classification as a genre novel. Gaimans prose is well suited to an audio presentation, and George Guidall does an almost entirely delightful job of bringing the characters to life. My one complaint with the audio version of this novel has to do with Guidalls performance: while he supplies a rich range of voices for the male characters, all of his women seem to share the same simpering pseudo-falsetto. Overall, however, it was a very enjoyable way to experience one of my favorite books. - Reviewer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
